An unassuming part of nature, peat and peatlands have more use than you may first think. You may have walked across peatlands, or bogs, or moors before (especially in the U.K.), but this transformed organic matter is used widely for agriculture, flood mitigation, as a source of drinking water, and much more. Peatlands are actually major carbon capturers, and so keeping them protected and healthy is important for the planet. A very popular use of peat is in traditional spa treatments, and as "Balneotherapy", where the whole body is immersed to treat skin. Peat contains humic compounds, which have been documented to be astringent, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.
