Meadow Queen
Plant Name: Meadowsweet

INCI Name: Spiraea Ulmaria Flower Extract

Spiraea ulmaria, also known as Queen of the Meadows, was traditionally used and known to be effective for pain relief and was touted many centuries ago as being an excellent remedy for moderate pain. Meadowsweet also inspired the name of the drug aspirin, from its botanical name and due to its salicylic acid properties. Scientific research has highlighted Meadowsweet’s anti-inflammatory activities in reducing IL-6 and TNF-α production in THP1 macrophages. Active compounds in Meadowsweet have been shown to inhibit histidine decarboxylase, which catalyses the formation of histamine, suggesting an anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities have been found, making this herb a valuable cosmetic ingredient.
