Hamamelis virginiana is a small deciduous tree with yellow flowers which is native to the eastern parts of North America. Native Americans used Witch Hazel for wound healing and eye problems. The ointment has shown good effects on skin injuries and topical inflammation. It is also used as an astringent which is useful in the treatment of acne. It is commonly found in skin care products for cleansing skin due to its antibacterial properties.
A study has shown that a Witch Hazel-containing shampoo was beneficial in reducing inflammation and relieving scalp itchiness.
